Thanks for checking out my new blog!
I’ve been editing professionally for over a year now and have come to find that while writing resources exist, there are fewer specifically for worldbuilders and many of those only offer a simple, unnuanced perspective on topics thoroughly covered by writers and editors alike.
As a developmental editor, it is my belief that there are no strict rules in writing. What works for some, most even, rarely works for all. Instead of dictating the “rules” of writing, I’d like to facilitate open conversations about developmental concerns, literary elements, and genre conventions for SFF (sci-fi and fantasy). So, I thought that here we could build a place together to discuss things of interest to worldbuilders, such as:
• The role infodumping may play in your manuscript.
• The dynamics of adding conlangs (constructed languages) to your work.
• How much setting and description your book may need.
• The conventions of Gothic Fiction and how they can be used in your work.
• Word count in multi-POV novels.
• The development and utilization of cultures.
• How conflict may operate in Utopian Fiction.
To supplement my biased and limited perspective on writing and worldbuilding, I’m collecting tips and opinions from other SFF editors as well. I’d also love to incorporate snippets of your world—written to start but we could branch into other mediums too—into the blog, so be sure to check the AU’s (author’s) note and my social media for opportunities to contribute.
If there are any topics you’d like me to cover, any perspectives you’d like highlighted here, or any other concerns, let me know! It might take me a bit to collect all the necessary information and resources for posts or to implement new rules for our community, but I’d love to listen and share!
